Young Peoples' Advocacy

Hi, I'm

the Advocacy Co-ordinator for Young People aged 14-25 in Central Cheshire.

We run Advocacy Awareness sessions in schools and colleges to increase understanding of advocacy with Young People through a series of regular meetings about issues such as likes, dislikes, hopes and choices.

We provide crisis / issue-based advocacy to support young people through particular problems and issues

We set up long term Citizen Advocacy Partnerships in the same way IA currently does for people over the age of 18. Once a young person has been referred and his or her needs identified, we will then get to know them and 'match' them with a young Advocate from the local community. IA will support the Partnership throughout.

The Young Peoples’ Advocacy Project at IA supports Young People in Central Cheshire with learning disabilities, aged 14-25 with their advocacy needs.

There are many choices to be made at this stage of life to do with:

These decisions can be really difficult to make and often Young People with learning disabilities are not even included in the process. This can be complicated further when the young person has difficulty communicating their wishes, or the people in their lives find it hard to value their methods of communication.

IA aims to ensure that the wishes of people with complex needs are central to decisions that affect their lives.

By raising awareness of advocacy in Young People and the groups that support them, we are hoping that the need for Crisis Advocacy at school leaving age will be reduced as will the stress of change for the young person.

This is a brand new project funded by the Department of Health through the British Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) with additional funding for Crisis Advocacy provided by the Big Lottery Fund. Consequently IA is now able to accept Crisis Advocacy referrals for people under the age of 18.

We’re always on the lookout for people to volunteer to advocate for a young person. If you have the time to meet up with someone regularly to chat about your shared interests, hopes and dreams, to do an activity together, or to be a good neighbour then contact us for more information or apply online

It takes…

A friend not an expert
A good listener
A little time to get to know someone
Opening the door to other possibilities
A belief that everyone has a right to be heard
